Be a Councillor in Scotland
Learn about the role of a councillor, what local councils do, what councillors do, who can become one and and how they become elected.
Your local council needs you!
Councillors are representatives of their community. They make decisions that shape the future of their towns, villages and cities on issues such as street safety, public health, and transport. It is therefore so important for local councillors to represent the full diversity of our communities, making decisions to impact life for the better. Sadly however, only 35% of Scotland’s councillors are women, only 0.9% of women elected are from BAME communities and the average age of a councillor in Scotland is 53.
This guide will provide you with everything you need to know about becoming a councillor, including demystifying councils, the practicalities of becoming a councillor and what support is available. It follows hundreds of conversations with women in our community, answering the questions we hear most regularly to ensure you have everything you need on this important next step of your political journey.
