SCOTTISH WOMEN OF COLOUR IN POLITICS - HOW DO I GET STARTED?

Event Images Template.png

This session is specifically for Scottish Women of Colour* who are at the very start of their political journey.

Are you wondering how to get more politically involved, and what that involvement means? Curious about politics, the way it works, and the different roles available in elected office? Are you sceptical about entering politics because of your visibility as a woman of colour, but are pulled towards it anyway? Then this session is for you!

This is a brilliant starter workshop as part of our Getting Started series, for Scottish Women of Colour right at the start of their political journeys. Scottish Women of Colour in Politics - How Do I Get Started will give you the opportunity to explore the reason why you want to get into politics and give you practical tips on how to do it. We will cover broadly what roles are available to you in elected office, help you understand how being elected can help you make a difference in your community. The session will leave you with the knowledge of lived experience in elected office as you hear from brilliant Women of Colour in political office,

This workshop is run by our Scottish team at Elect Her and is for Black, Asian, and other ethnic minority women* from all parties and none. If this sounds up your street, then please come and join us for what promises to be a brilliant, illuminating and encouraging session.

As we mentioned this is a starter event to really embed and whet your appetite to continue or start your political journey. If you enjoyed this session and are keen to learn more, please join us for our 3 part workshop series “What Does My Political Future Look Like? – for Scottish Women of Colour” to map out your political journey and the steps you need to take to get into elected office.

This workshop has been funded by the Corra Foundation.

*A Note on language: At The Parliament Project we are continuously exploring our use of language pertaining to women who are ethnic minorities. We are committed to creating space for women for whom racism, prejudice and discrimination may be a barrier to their political journeys. We completely understand that the phrase Women of Colour or BAME, presents women within these communities as a monolith, and we know this is not the case! We are seeking to use language that racialised women from across Scotland identify with. Ultimately this session is for racially minoritised women in Scotland, who may experience racism, prejudice and discrimination based on their race and/or religious belief.

Elect Her is committed to hosting inclusive, accessible events that enable all individuals, including women with disabilities, to engage fully in our conversations. We provide AI live captioning for all our online workshops. If you require BSL interpretation for this session, or any further accommodations to access this event, please email zainab@elect-her.org.uk Requests must be made at least 2 working days before the scheduled event in order to enable us time to make arrangements.

This is a women only event.
