HER LIFE IN POLITICS AS A MP

Women make up 51% of the population, but only 32% of Scotland’s MPs. Overall, only 6% of all MPs are women of colour, only 3 publicly describe themselves as disabled and 6% of all women MPS identify as LGBT+. This is not enough - we need a broad range of voices in the rooms where decisions are made, so that women’s lived experiences can be heard and taken into account. Join us on Tuesday 6th September to find out how by becoming a MP you can create positive change for your community and bring your experiences to the decision making table.

her life in politics as a mp Tuesday 6th September 19:30-21:00 Hear from Amy Callaghan, Anum Qaiser and Wendy Chamberlain as they share what life is like representing their Scottish constituency in Westminster

Every week in September, we are holding a series of webinars to bring together some of the amazing women elected at all levels of politics in Scotland. Whether you are thinking about putting yourself forward for election, or you are just dipping your toe in politics, these webinars are for you!

We need women like you who care for and understand their local communities represented in Westminster. If you’re passionate about supporting your community and want to make change where it counts, join us for this webinar to hear from current MPs across Scotland about what motivated them to enter politics, how they first got started and what life has been like as a MP, so that you can be better prepared for your political future.

The webinar will be hosted by Lauren Bennie, a former community councillor and chair, 2019 general election candidate and women’s rights campaigner focused on women in politics and women’s health.

There’s no required qualification or experience to become a MSP, you just need to have lived a life and care. In this webinar, we’ll hear from panellists from a range of life and work experiences who will share how their previous experience has helped them as a MP. The panellists include Amy Callaghan, Anum Qaisar and Wendy Chamberlain.

After this webinar, you will be able to:

  • Better understand the roles and responsibilities of a MP.

  • Consider your own motivation to stand for elected office.

If you’d like to learn from this webinar but can’t make this time, don’t worry! Register anyway and we’ll send you the recording afterwards.

All women are welcome to register for this webinar. Non-binary people who see themselves as partially or sometimes identifying as femme and feel they would benefit from accessing a women-centred space are welcome to join us.

Elect Her is committed to hosting inclusive, accessible events that enable all women to engage fully in our conversations. We provide AI live captioning for all our online workshops & events, and will provide BSL interpretation for this webinar. If you require any further accommodations to access this event, please email maggie@elect-her.org.uk. Requests must be made at least 2 working days before the scheduled event in order to enable us time to make arrangements.

This webinar is part of a wider series exploring the different roles in politics in Scotland. If you’re still considering which role is right for you in politics, be sure to check out our other webinars, taking place each week in September to get you started.
