Are you curious about becoming a councillor? Are you working out your next steps on your political pathway and are interested in learning more about this role? Do you want to know more about what a typical day for a councillor looks like? Then this workshop is for you!
This workshop is in partnership with the Local Government Association (LGA) and the Be A Councillor initiative, offering a safe space to hear from amazing women who have been successfully elected as councillors who will share their experience.
If you are passionate about your local community, we need you. Councillors make a huge difference to the quality of life of local people and how local issues are dealt with. We need people from all backgrounds and experiences who reflect the communities they serve to put themselves forward for election.
If you’re considering becoming a councillor, you will discover everything you need to know to make your decision through this workshop. In this session, we will explain what councils and councillors do, what you will need to do to take your first steps and all about the role and the support you can expect. This is the opportunity to ask all the questions you have for women already in the role and consider whether now is the time for you to put yourself forward to represent your local community.
You do not have to be a member of the big three political parties to stand for election, you can be an independent councillor or stand for another party. By signing up to this workshop, we’ll share with you resources explaining what support is available for all candidates.
By the end of this workshop, you will:
Have stronger networks of support, including amongst a community of likeminded women at a similar stage of their political journey,
Understand what councillors do, including the time commitment and responsibilities required, learning from current councillors’ lived experience,
Have a practical plan for moving forward, including the next steps you can take towards becoming a councillor and understand how we can support you during your political journey.
We’ll be hosting this session twice on Thursday 24th November, at 12:30-1:30pm and 7:30-9pm, so you can choose a time that best matches your schedule. In the lunchtime session, we will hear from Cllr Chessie Flack, the Liberal Democrat representative for the London Borough of Merton and Cllr Olivia Lyons, the Conservative representative for Cannock Chase. In the evening session, we will hear from Cllr Kam Kaur, the Conservative representative for Warwick and Cllr Lily Fitzgibbon, the Green representative for Bristol.
