We need more women to stand, but more than that, we need a system that supports more women standing

By Katie McSherry

Casting my vote on 4th July, snap election day, I was frustrated that only 30% of candidates in the UK General Election were women, but also that many don’t believe there is a problem.

And I am proud to have been part of the journey for over 80 of the women who stood in that election - through providing coaching, training resources, grants and community with Elect Her.

These women, our candidates, some of whom I have worked with for over four years, have shown me so much, and blown much of what I thought I knew about politics out of the window. Some of them are the first women of colour to stand in their area. Some couldn't afford shoes or a decent coat to go door knocking in. Some are disabled, facing basic barriers to participation that a small grant could overcome. Many faced online abuse. All stepped into politics because they wanted to improve their community and their life experiences had given them many avenues to think that they had insights into what policy changes are needed. All have felt isolated at times.

And then there are the many more women who gave it their all and were gutted that they didn't make it onto the ballot paper. Getting selected is hard, running a campaign and meeting the additional costs is hard.

That's why we at Elect Her offer a multi-party supportive community, providing training, resources and coaching. Because with a gang behind you, it is doable!

I've been overwhelmed by messages of pride and gratitude from candidates who are so proud of how far they have come, to speak up for what they believe and represent the issues in their community, regardless of the outcome.

We need more women to stand, but more than that, we need a system that supports more women standing.

And until it is built, Elect Her are doing it.

All those who put themselves forward deserve our support - after all they make democracy work.

It costs £1500 for each woman we support. Please support us to be the change.
