Increasing the representation of racially minoritised women in UK local politics

Professor Khursheed Wadia led a deep listening research project that spoke to councillors across the country, mapping the barriers to entry to politics.

On February 4th we were delighted to host the launch of Warwick University and the Muslim Women’s Network UK’s (MWNUK) latest report revealing the pressing need for greater equity in local politics, the work demonstrates a significant underrepresentation of racially minoritised women in our democracy.

Professor Khursheed Wadia led a deep listening research project that spoke to councillors across the country, mapping the barriers to entry to politics. But as this report reveals this isn’t just about the route into elected office, once in office there are specific institutional barriers, in part because of the gendered division of councillor duties. 

Some of the critical points that came out of the work.

Critically her work finds 15 recommendations for change that will help to fix the system and create better representation in our democracy. Tangible change that challenges the status quo is critical at a time when we are seeing reversals, locally, in the democratic gains women and minorities have made in elected office. And yet this is where life changing decisions are made.

What this report highlights is that collective effort - in political parties, within institutions, and through processes - can drive the reform that will mean democracy works as it should, for all those it should.
